About

The modern mouth tells a story, and Primal Dentist is here to read it.

What did the human mouth evolve with before the modern world arrived with processed food, fluorescent supermarket aisles, antiseptic mouthwash, energy drinks, ultra-soft diets, and toothpaste containing ingredients that sound like they escaped from an industrial chemistry manual?

Primal Dentist explores oral health from the perspective that the mouth is not separate from the body — and certainly not separate from the environment humans evolved within.

For most of human history, broad jaws, straight teeth, functional airways, and relatively low rates of chronic dental disease appear to have been far more common than they are today. Our genes have changed very little in the last 20,000 years. Our food, habits, chemical exposures, stress levels, sleep, breathing patterns, and lifestyles have changed dramatically.

The modern mouth reflects that mismatch with brutal honesty.

This website was born from years of patient conversations. After three decades of answering questions about fluoride, nutrition, dental materials, mercury, airway health, microbiomes, mouth breathing, inflammation, toothpaste ingredients, and “what actually matters?”, it became clear that many people are searching for a broader framework that connects the dots.

The problem is that modern health information can feel like a maze. One expert says fluoride is essential. Another says avoid it entirely.

One article claims bacteria are the enemy.

Another says sterilizing the mouth damages the microbiome.

One practitioner promotes detoxification.

Another dismisses the entire concept.

Somewhere between mainstream dismissal and internet hysteria sits a quieter space where thoughtful, biologically grounded discussion can occur. That is the space Primal Dentist hopes to occupy.

This is not an anti-dentistry website.

Nor is it a place for fear-based sensationalism or miracle cures.

Modern dentistry has relieved enormous suffering and remains deeply valuable. But repairing damage and understanding why the damage is occurring are not always the same thing.

Primal Dentist asks bigger questions.

What happens when evolutionary biology, anthropology, nutrition, airway science, toxicology, microbiology, and modern dentistry are viewed together rather than in isolation?

What if the mouth is one of the clearest mirrors of overall physiological health?

What if crowded teeth, inflamed gums, chronic decay, poor sleep, dysfunctional breathing, and recurrent oral disease are not random defects — but signals?

Over time, this website will grow into a library of articles, blogs, podcasts, videos, interviews, practical guides, and research exploring topics such as:

• Ancestral nutrition and jaw development

• Vitamin K2, vitamin D, vitamin A, magnesium, and mineral balance

• The oral microbiome and modern antiseptic habits

• Fluoride: chemistry, physiology, exposure, and controversy

• Toothpaste and mouthwash ingredients

• Mercury, heavy metals, and cumulative toxic load

• Mouth breathing, sleep, airway health, and facial development

• Gum disease and systemic inflammation

• Dental materials and biocompatibility

• Processed food and the modern inflammatory environment

• The mouth-body connection in chronic disease

• Holistic and biologically informed approaches to oral care

The goal is not to provide rigid dogma or simplistic answers. Biology is rarely that tidy. Instead, the hope is to offer educated and curious readers a balanced guide through the often confusing world of holistic and biological health — grounded in science, informed by clinical experience, and viewed through a wider evolutionary lens. Think of it as part dentistry, part anthropology, part physiology, part detective work.

A place for people who suspect there may be more to oral health than “brush twice daily and avoid sugar,” but who also value nuance, evidence, and intellectual honesty.
